Burning Our Candles

SUGGESTED TIPS FOR BURNING OUR 100% PURE BEESWAX CANDLES

VOTIVES: Beeswax votives should be burned in a votive container that is close to the size of the votive. Beeswax votives need to create a pool of wax as they burn. Beeswax votives burned for short periods time will create tunneling and will not burn the majority of the beeswax. Burn a minimum of four hours before extinguishing the flame. Place votive in a clean container free of residual wax and old wick tabs.

TEA LIGHTS:  Tea lights need to create a pool of wax while burning and should be burned in their aluminum or polycarbonate containers. Tea light candles are best burned continuously to burn most of the beeswax. Before each lighting, straighten and trim wick to 3/8”. To reuse the aluminum or polycarbonate cups, place used cups upside down in an old pie tin and heat in the oven @ 175*F for about ½ hour. Use care so as not to burn yourself.

TAPERS:  If tapers are too large for your candleholder, you can shave the base of the candle with a potato peeler until it fits snugly in the holder. If the base of the taper is smaller than your candle holder you can wrap the base of the candle with strips of tape until it fits firmly in your candle holder. Or, you can heat the bottom of the candle with your lighter and then firmly place the candle in your holder to “seat” it. Straighten and trim wick to 3/8” before each lighting.

SOLID PILLARS: To prevent tunneling of your beeswax pillar down the middle which leaves a lot of beeswax unburned, we suggest the following continuous burn times for our 100% beeswax pillar candles:

  • 1.5" PILLARS:  Burn a minimum of one hour before extinguishing the flame.
  • 2" PILLARS:  Burn a minimum of 1 1/2 hours before extinguishing the flame.
  • 2.5" PILLARS:  Burn a minimum of three hours before extinguishing the flame.
  • 3" PILLARS:  Burn a minimum of five hours before extinguishing the flame.
  • 4" PILLARS:  Burn a minimum of eight hours before extinguishing the flame.
  • 6" PILLARS:  For our 6” diameter pillars, light all three wicks and burn the candle continuously at least 5 hours. Trim wick to 3/8” before each lighting.
  • After extinguishing the flame, allow the edges to cool to warm. Gently mold the edges inward with damp fingers. Straighten and trim wick to 3/8” before each lighting. Keep out of drafts to prevent one side of the wax dam from melting through and dripping.

HONEYCOMB PILLARS:  Honeycomb is very fragile when cold, and is best handled at room temperature. To prevent tunneling and to burn most of the beeswax over the life of the pillar, burn a 3” diameter pillar for at least two hours; Burn a 2” pillar for at least one hour. After extinguishing the flame, allow the edges to cool to warm. Gently mold the edges inward with damp fingers. Straighten and trim wick to 3/8” before each lighting. Keep out of drafts to prevent one side of the wax dam from melting through and dripping.

CLEANING YOUR VOTIVE CANDLE CONTAINERS:  To remove residual wax from votive glass containers, place containers in freezer overnight and then gently tap upside down to remove old wax. Use caution to not break the votive glass. Or, place votive container in an old pie tin in your oven at 175* until wax is melted. Use caution to not burn yourself.

CLEANING YOUR METAL CANDLE HOLDERS:  To remove residual wax from metal candleholders, place holder in an old pie tin in your oven at 175* until wax is melted. Use caution to not burn yourself.
